SMU research has been thriving. We are continually tapping on new possibilities at the intersections of Management, Social Science and Computing. The SMU Research Climate encompasses core disciplines in these three areas. Our research is undertaken in alignment with our multidisciplinary research Areas of Excellence.
In accordance to SMU’s overall research climate, our PhD students undertake research in one of the following ways.
The diagram below shows SMU’s Research Climate. The core disciplines under the umbrella of Management, Social Science and Computing are listed accordingly. SMU’s research is undertaken across the core disciplines and/or in alignment with our multidisciplinary research Areas of Excellence.
Applied Math: Statistics, Optimisation, Social and Economic Dynamics, Computational Approaches

SMU has substantial research activities and increasingly rich eco-systems interlinking research, education and practice associated with the SMU Areas of Excellence. The 5 areas of excellence, listed below, are university-level competencies that leverage interdisciplinary approaches to solve societal challenges. Details are available by clicking the links below.
Our PhD students would either delve deep into their chosen disciplines (according to the research areas specialisations listed in each of the 4 boxes in the diagram below) or undertake interdisciplinary research. Interdisciplinary studies could be undertaken across PhD programmes (such as Economics and Finance) or in alignment with SMU research areas of excellence (as shown in the 5 circles in the diagram below).
