Unsure if you would like to pursue a Doctoral Programme? You could start with a Research Masters.
If you are considering a career in academia at either an academic institution or industry but have not decided that you would like to pursue a doctoral programme right after your Bachelor’s degree, SMU’s Master by Research programmes will provide you a head start on research work. It will allow you to ascertain if research is what you would like to pursue as a career.
SMU offers four Master by Research programmes:
School of Economics
The SMU Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Economics is a two-year research degree, with coursework running alongside with the MPhil thesis. All courses are PhD-level courses.
For non-SMU students interested in this programme, you must have a good Bachelor’s degree (not necessarily in economics) but with sufficient mathematics/statistics training. SMU Year 4 undergraduates may have the opportunity to enrol early into this programme.
School of Social Sciences
School of Information Systems
The SMU Master of Science in Information Systems programme is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the specialisations of data management and information retrieval, information security, information systems management, intelligent decision support systems, or software systems.
