About Us

Overview

The College of Graduate Research Studies (CGRS) plays a significant role in facilitating the development of interdisciplinary PhD programmes, which are offered by various SMU Schools. We provide inputs on programme proposals to enhance interdisciplinary content, facilitate discussions on required and elective courses, and coordinate across schools to ensure a comprehensive range of course offerings for our students.

Our goal is to enhance integration and interdisciplinarity across the various SMU postgraduate research programmes, enabling SMU’s postgraduate research (PGR) students to gain a holistic learning experience and well-grounded approach to their research. This is achieved through interdisciplinary programmes, shared courses and professional training workshops.

The College is also committed to strengthen networking, cohort building and collaborative opportunities for PGR students across the various programmes, facilitated through the student and alumni groups.

Through enabling these initiatives, we hope to nurture a community of learners who will be poised to tackle challenges with confidence and create significant impact across businesses, societies, and public institutions worldwide.

There are three categories of SMU’s PGR programmes, and these are:

Academic Research PhD Programmes
Professional Doctorate Programmes
Master by Research Programmes

Vision

Develop world-class thought leaders who are trained to undertake cutting-edge research across disciplines, bringing about significant impact to businesses, societies and public institutions worldwide.

Mission

Equip SMU PGR students with knowledge and competencies to develop novel solutions that are relevant to some of today’s most challenging issues through the integration of disciplines, cultures and industries.
Provide a holistic and community-based experience in postgraduate research that is based on interdisciplinary programmes, networking and cohort-building.
Nurture a community of learners who can tap on a wide network of expertise, as well as disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge as they create significant, long-term impact.
