SMU Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE), in partnership with the College of Graduate Research Studies (CGRS), offers the GIFT programme to prepare doctoral students for a teaching role as a faculty in the future. The programme orientates participants in the competencies, proficiency skills and strategies of effective teaching at SMU. It is also a pre-requisite for doctoral students who wish to take up the Graduate Instructor (GI) appointment at SMU, where the role is required to deliver a course (typically at the undergraduate level) independently like a faculty. At the end of the GIFT programme, students can look forward to the following learning outcomes:
- Describe SMU's distinctive pedagogical approach
- Identify key considerations an educator should have in creating a meaningful learning experience
- Outline motivational strategies that support learning in different contexts
- State transferable competencies that are relevant to the world of work
There are 3 parts to GIFT programme:
- GIFT I will take place every January for year 2 PhD students.
- GIFT II consists of a half-day workshop and a half-day Micro-teaching segment. It will take place in late April and early May for those who have completed GIFT I.
- GIFT III is only required for appointed Graduate Instructors in the upcoming term. The face-to-face consultation session with CTE will take place during the week before the term starts.
