COURSE OVERVIEW
COURSE OUTLINE

The compulsory Graduate Research Professional Development (GRPD) course is organised by the College of Graduate Research Studies (CGRS). The course aims to bring together students from different Academic Research PhD Programmes (ARP), in a series of seminars, workshops and events to develop the students’ multidisciplinary knowledge, intellectual and interpersonal skills in various professional areas. These areas have been identified as part of the SMU Graduate Learning Outcomes which defines SMU’s holistic education approach.

The table below shows the course overview of the 1.0 CU Graduate Research Professional Development (GRPD) that will be introduced to all incoming PhD students in the non-STEM disciplines with effect from AY2022.

This 2.5-day workshop is designed to help students overcome the most common pitfalls of scientific presentations and transform their delivery into a confident, engaging performance. Led by Justin Lebrun from Scientific Reach, the workshop equips students with practical techniques to boost confidence and captivate their audience.

Students will learn why presentation impact depends less on text-heavy slides and more on their presence, clarity, and visual support. They will tackle the three biggest challenges faced by presenting scientists: fear, overly technical slides, and unexpectedly mixed audiences. By mastering a framework for slide design, refining live delivery, and strengthening their response to questions, students will leave with greater confidence, fluency, and authority.

Through hands-on activities such as slide redesign, live oral presentations, and an exclusive tutorial on mastering Q&A sessions, this workshop offers a unique opportunity for students to sharpen their communication skills and stand out as compelling presenters in academia and beyond.

Graduate Instructors English Assessment

The Centre for English Communication (CEC), in collaboration with the College of Graduate Research Studies (CGRS), is offering the assessment twice a year, providing students with greater flexibility and opportunities to participate.

It is designed to assess students’ readiness to teach a topic suitable for SMU Year 1 undergraduates, demonstrating competence in pronunciation, presentation skills, and the use of Standard English. Participants will prepare a 20-to-25-minute interactive presentation with slides and planned audience interactions, ensuring engagement and effective communication. Presentations outside this timeframe will not meet assessment requirements.

Instructors from CEC will evaluate the presentations and provide recommendations to CGRS, whose decision is final. A compulsory pre-assessment is required for all interested participants. To be nominated as a Graduate Instructor in their school, students must pass the GI English Assessment and complete the Graduate Instructor Foundations in Teaching (GIFT I & II).
