The Industrial Postgraduate Programme (IPP), supported by the Economic Development Board (EDB), aims to develop a pool of postgraduate research talent in Singapore. The programme provides postgraduate students with industry-relevant training in both the academic and corporate Research and Development (R&D) environments. At the end of the training, graduates will take on R&D roles in the industry.

Eligibility
- Candidates must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.
- Candidates must meet the university’s minimum admission requirements for the relevant doctoral programmes.
- Candidates are expected to be full-time employees of the partner companies and are approved for full-time studies in the relevant doctoral programme with SMU.
- For application to the Doctor of Engineering programme, candidates can be fresh / existing employees of the respective partner companies, with a minimum of 3 years relevant working experience.
Features
- Candidates would be enrolled in one of the university’s postgraduate research programmes and would have to fulfil the requirements of the university, as well as of the respective partner companies.
- Subsidised tuition fees will be fully covered, and monthly stipends will be provided for four years for the Doctor of Engineering (EngD) programme. Other benefits include insurance and conference funding.
- Candidates will work on jointly-identified research projects that are of specific interest to the respective partner companies.
- Each of the candidates will be jointly mentored by an academic co-supervisor from the university and a non-academic co-supervisor from the respective partner companies.
- Candidates are expected to spend at least 50% of their time at the respective partner companies’ research facilities to work on the research projects.
- Partner companies are based in Singapore, and have corporate R&D laboratories in Singapore. The university and respective partner companies would have formalised research collaboration agreements between one another in this scheme.

Interested companies will jointly scope research projects with identified SMU faculty members before submitting the research proposal to EDB for consideration.
