Singapore embraces multiculturalism where different local and global ethnicities live harmoniously and diversity is viewed as a virtuous strength.

Given its strategic geographical setting, political stability, open business policies and strong infrastructure, Singapore has segued over the last few decades from a regional entrepot of choice for many multinational organisations to over 300 Fortune 500 companies housing their Asia Pacific headquarters. Singapore is a key financial and aviation hub and places an emphasis on innovation and prosperity with social and corporate responsibility.

Located at the heart of Singapore's bustling central business district, SMU is positioned to tap into these facets and provide you with unparalleled opportunities for networking and personal growth. The city's low crime-rate, accessible and well-connected transportation system, and inexpensive local food make it one of the most sought-after places both regionally and globally to live, work and play

10 Reasons to Choose a City Campus

Cultural Exposure

Away from homogenous environments, studies have shown that students in ethnically diverse settings perform better academically and reap greater professional success. While Singapore is a melting hot pot of culture in and of itself, being right smack in the middle of the busy city increases one’s exposure to diverse cultures.

Bustling Campus Community

Being nestled in the heart of the city, urban campuses tend to attract students who equally thrive in the energy. From art festivals to annual conferences, there is no end to the plethora of activities and movements that students support and come up with.

Diverse Dining Options

Don’t feel like having Hainanese curry rice today? No problem. There’s always a great burger bistro right around the corner. How about some artisanal ice-cream to sweeten the deal? Being in a city campus, you’re surrounded by a wide array of options. There is no confining to one particular place when you’re in the heart of the busy city.

Convenience in Transport

Like choosing a home, it’s all about location, location, location when it comes to choosing a school too. Nestled in the heart of the metropolis, city campuses are surrounded by buses that travel everywhere, and train stations that are five-minute strolls away. The ease of getting from point A to B is unparalleled when you study in the city.

Singapore Train System Map as of 4 Oct ’17 (Source: lta.gov.sg)

Real-world Experience

Unlike campuses in the heartlands, a city campus puts you right in the hustle and bustle of the work crowd. Let’s face it, in a few years’ time you will graduate and enter the workforce. Why not slowly assimilate yourself over the years by immersing right in?

Exposure to Industry Experts

With your school in the city, your campus becomes the ideal venue for workshops and seminars. Learn a thing or two about market research. Take a peek into the workings of a social technology start-up. With highly acclaimed seminars held right on your grounds, you get to rub shoulders with industry bigwigs – something most students can only dream of.

Networking Opportunities

The vibrant atmosphere of your city campus also becomes an ideal venue for holding networking events, and getting to know some people in the industry you’re looking to join always puts you in a good position.

Home is Where the Heart is

With its convenience, being in the heart of the city also enables you to return home easily. No longer is there unnecessary expenditure on university dormitory, studying in a city campus means you get to study without sacrificing family time.

Partying it Up!

With numerous party options just in the vicinity of your city campus, you’ll find your way to key party spots in no time! Whether you’re looking to just chill with a small group of friends or to dance the night away, rest assured that you’re in the right place. Time to let your hair loose and party up after the long week of studying!

Work Hard Chill Out

And on the topic of having diverse options, choosing a city campus also puts one in close physical proximity to a plethora of leisure options. It’s so much more convenient to unwind with a movie (or shopping spree!) after a long lecture when you’re attending a city campus.

Message from our Dean

Our world is evolving rapidly and is more connected than ever. Academics who down through history have profoundly shaped the way people understand their environments and one another, now need to be able to think across different domains, bringing interdisciplinarity into their research. It was for this reason that the Singapore Management University founded the College of Graduate Research Studies (CGRS).

SMU CGRS enhances integration and interdisciplinarity across its various postgraduate research (PGR) programmes, enabling students to gain a holistic learning experience and well-grounded approach to their research, supported by a like-minded community of fellow researchers and faculty mentors. This is achieved through interdisciplinary programmes, shared courses, and professional training workshops. Furthermore, the College also strengthens networking, cohort building and collaborative opportunities for PGR students across the various programmes, facilitated through student and alumni groups. Ultimately, our PGR students will be poised to tackle challenges affecting businesses, societies, and institutions across boundaries with confidence, and create significant impact. The College also ensures that you do not take your postgraduate research journey alone. We will be there for you at every major juncture.

With a passion for research and teaching, you can embark on in-depth studies in your areas of interest – mentored and supervised by our distinguished faculty members who are internationally recognised as experts in their fields. I am proud to say that our graduates have proceeded on to walk well in the footsteps of their faculty mentors, carving out impactful careers in academia and industry, in Singapore and around the world. I encourage you to take this first step in shaping your future with SMU and look forward to welcoming you on board one of our programmes!

Table A: Tuition Fee Payable for AY2025 MPhil Cohorts at the Year of Admission

Notes:

  • The indicated programme fees are in Singapore Dollars and may subject to revision on an annual basis.
  • The MPhil tuition fee is payable in four billings over two years and the PhD tuition fee is payable in eight billings over four years. Students are required to pay tuition fees twice a year in each Academic Year, i.e., Term 1 (in August) and Term 2 (in December of prior year).
  • The annual subsidised fee for Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students will follow a fixed fee model for the new AY2025 cohort. Tuition fees for all citizenship groups will remain unchanged for the remaining course duration during the university studies.
  • The annual subsidised fees for Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents shown are without Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is separately subsidised by the Singapore Government.
  • The subsidised fees for International Students and non-subsidised fees shown are inclusive of GST, which is subject to change. The fees chargeable will be based on the prevailing GST rate in the year of billing.
  • With effect from the AY2019 admission cohorts, students who extend their programme candidature beyond the normal duration, i.e., 3 years for MPhil and 5 years for PhD programmes, will be required to pay the tuition fee that is equivalent to the extended candidature duration (by academic terms). The rate will be pegged to their existing citizenship and following the fee treatment in the year where the fee is payable.

Eligibility Guidelines for Ministry of Education (MOE) Subsidy

  • The substantial tuition subsidy from the Government of Singapore comes in the form of a subsidy that is administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and is offered to all admitted students up to the normal candidature duration. Students need not apply for the MOE subsidy if they are eligible.
  • Students with a Higher Degree Qualification
Students who have previously enjoyed MOE subsidy in a graduate programme will not be eligible for MOE subsidy in another graduate programme at the same or lower level. Instead, such students will be liable to pay the non-subsidised fees for the graduate programme that they now wish to undertake. For example, students who had previously enjoyed MOE subsidy in a Master’s programme and had attained the Master’s degree will not be eligible for subsidy in another programme at Master’s degree or lower level.

  • Transferred or Re-admitted Students
Students who are transferred across the local Autonomous Universities* or re-admitted in SMU will be eligible to receive MOE subsidy up to the normal candidature duration of the new programme less the number of academic terms of MOE subsidy received for the previous programme.

*Autonomous Universities refer to SMU, National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).
  • Service Obligation
Self-financing International Students who choose to pay the subsidised fees will need to take up a three-year service obligation. As part of the service obligation, the International Students are required to work in Singapore-based companies** upon graduation. Those who choose NOT to opt for the service obligation will be liable for the non-subsidised fees. The details of this service agreement can be found on the MOE website.

**Singapore-based companies refer to local companies and international companies that have a base in Singapore which is registered with the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA). The duration of the service obligation is fixed at three years, regardless of the duration of study at subsidised rates.

The postgraduate research tuition fees for cohorts admitted in prior academic years from AY2022 to AY2024 will continue to pay the same cohort-based fees conveyed to them at the point of admission, except for AY2022 and AY2023 intakes of International Students where their fees have been adjusted to take into account the GST hike in 2023 and 2024.
