The PhD in Economics programme is technically rigorous and mathematically demanding. A strong mathematical background is essential just to get through the first year's core courses. An ideal background would include multivariable calculus (typically covered over two courses of calculus at the undergraduate level), real analysis, intermediate level linear algebra, and a strong foundation in probability and statistics.
PhD in PSYCHOLOGY
- Good Bachelor's degree in Psychology or relevant training/experience
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results
The GRE General test is required for all applicants except those graduating with a bachelor degree (in any discipline) from SMU, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore Institute of Technology and Singapore University of Social Sciences. (i.e., Singapore autonomous universities). Applicants from these universities will be considered without GRE scores. However, they are encouraged to submit their scores, if available.
The GRE Psychology Subject test is not required. However, applicants without a bachelor degree in psychology are strongly encouraged to take it and submit their results so that their knowledge in basic psychology can be taken into consideration when their applications are reviewed.

Admission to the programme is highly competitive. Applicants with strong GPA and GRE scores, and a demonstrated record of research experience will have an added advantage. A Master's degree is not necessary and will neither enhance nor hinder an applicant's chances of admission.
